Inc is currently engaged by the Chicago
Department of Transportation to redesign one of Chicago’s most historic
streets, Fulton Market. The design will feature both a curbless “flex street”
as well as an iconic entry Gateway at Halsted and Fulton Market.
Fulton Market is a dynamic street in the midst of
great change. Historically this corridor primarily housed food processing and
distribution facilities with open air markets and active distribution. Today,
these food wholesalers share this unique street with high-end restaurants, art
galleries and innovative technology businesses.
The City of Chicago, in order to ensure the area
continues to serve the needs of both existing and new companies, is
implementing a strategic land-use plan that preserves the area’s fundamental
historic characteristics while providing a framework for sustainable economic
growth and investment.
Altamanu is working with CDOT and the public to
create an innovative new design for the street. The curbless flex street design will
accommodate existing distribution and truck traffic during the day, and allow
for street closures for special events and weekend farmers markets. The
historic cobblestone paving will be reclaimed and used throughout the
intersections, and custom wood and steel site furnishings will allow ample
on-street seating to serve the burgeoning outdoor restaurant and cafe
businesses. This project also features
infiltration planters and new LED street lighting.
