North Branch Trail

Chicago Botanic Gardens  |  Glencoe, IL
Altamanu worked closely with the Cook County Forest Preserve, Chicago Botanic Gardens, and IDOT to design this off-street multi-use trail along Lake Cook Road between the Green Bay Trail and the Chicago Botanical Gardens.
This new trail connects with the North Branch Trail to the south, and the Green Bay Trail to the east, making this a crucial off-street connection between the North Shore communities and the City of Chicago.  The trail also provides visitors to the Chicago Botanic Gardens a safe route to walk or bike from the Metra Station at Green Bay Road.
Meandering through wooded areas adjacent to wetlands, the trail design includes several elevated boardwalks designed to have minimal impact on sensitive vegetation and ecosystems. Portions of the trail utilize an innovative root aeration matting to ensure survival of mature existing trees, and a unique low-impact boardwalk structure design.
